SNOW GUARDS

Winter is coming, and for areas that experience snow fall, Enviroshake recommends the use of snow guards, especially for commercial buildings and all roofs over a 6/12 slope. We do not recommend a specific type of snow guard; this is the discretion of the contractor and the property owner as to what they want. Snow guards must be installed in accordance with our snow guard bulletin.

How did you know you needed a new roof?

When my husband and I bought our house in Salem, Massachusetts, we knew that we’d need to replace the roof within a few years. The existing roof was asphalt three-tab and in pretty poor condition. It’s a significant project to undertake and we knew that we wanted to do correctly. Our house is a side-facing gambrel roof colonial so the roof is an especially prominent feature–almost like the house’s hat.

Why did you choose Enviroshake?

We wanted to get the look of cedar shake without the enormous cost and maintenance issues. We were familiar with composite slate products but really wanted the color, texture and scale of a cedar shake for our project. We were very pleased to find that a product like Enviroshake exists and doubly pleased to learn of its high performance ratings and considerable warranty.

Could you tell me a bit more about the background on your historic area?

Our house is located in Salem’s McIntire Historic District which is the largest historic district in the city and features four centuries of architecture, from the mid-17th century through the early 20th century. It’s quite scenic and owners take pride in being good stewards of their homes. Our house is well over 200 years old and we see it as our responsibility to do our best to ensure that it says standing and in good condition for at least another 200 years.

Why did you not want to use the traditional material allowed in the historic area?

Our historic district had a precedent for permitting composite slate products so we went through Salem’s Historic District Commission process to gain permission to use Enviroshake.

How was the approval process in order to use Enviroshake?

We submitted our application and the Historic District Commission had us bring in samples and discuss the aesthetics and benefits of the products. The process was a little protracted due to snow and the Commission really wanted to see the product in person. Once the snow melted and they were able to see how it looked in a historic context in nearby Concord, Massachusetts, we were given provisional approval to use the product. We hope this paves the way for others in our area to use this product!

What support did you get from Enviroshake?

In addition to sending material samples and information, EnviroShake was able to identify other historic sites in the region who had used the product and even offered to help us present to the Historic Commission in person, which, in the end, wasn’t needed but was a very nice gesture and made us feel like a priority.

What are you most looking forward to about your Enviroshake roof?

I hope to be able to look up at our house’s “new hat” admiringly, pleased that we were able to find a material that reflects the style of roofing that would have originally been on our house in the early 19-century but updated with modern technology and engineering that our forebearers could never have imagined.
